Ridge
Runner
Glenville, NY
1950's-1981
Thanks
I'm not sure when it started, but probably in the 50's. We skied there in the middle and late 70's with our kids. I was the president in 79 or 80. 80 was a drought year and we struggled to operate. In 81 the place folded. There was a warming hut, an Oliver Tractor that someone made into a snow cat to roll the slopes. There were two rope tows. One going half way and the other to the top. Don't know the vertical, but some nice runs. There were lights for night skiing and I remember going over there one night after a foot of powder. It was a lot of fun.
There were three ski areas on the this hill (Glenville Hills). Ridge Runner had the most terrain, but we leased the land and in the end the landlord gouged us and that combined with the insurance was the final blow. The area to the west was Koppy Cat, that folded to. Ski Venture is still going (they owned the land).
Edward
Kudlacik has some more info:
There was another area called Ridge
Runner -- I know the location but have never walk over to it -- since
the land is typically posted. It is about 1/4 to 1/2 mile east of copy
cat on the same ridge. People who have walked over to it say that
there is nothing remaining -- perhaps a few pieces of steel.
Here's the likely location of Ridge Runner. Note that the trails are growing in. |
Here's a map from Ski Venture showing Ski Venture on the far right, Copy Cat (not marked but trails visible) in the middle. Ridge Runner is off of Ridge Rd. |
